Vehicles and transport
If you’re disabled you may be able to apply for the following:
- Exemption from paying vehicle tax. If you are in receipt of certain benefits, you may be able to claim exemption or a reduction in vehicle tax. You can find more information on the GOV.UK website.
- The Blue Badge scheme provides a range of parking concessions for people with severe mobility problems, and allows vehicles carrying people with certain disabilities to be parked near shops, stations and other facilities. Wakefield Council administers the Blue Badge scheme and can be contacted on 0846 8 506 506.
- A Disabled Persons Bus Pass can be applied for through Wakefield Council. The application form and eligibility criteria can be found here.
- The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair, using their Government funded mobility allowance. If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance, the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme. More information is available on the Motability website.
- The Access Bus is operated by Metro and is a dial-a-ride local bus service providing local transport to people who are unable to use a conventional bus service. Access Bus is a demand-responsive local bus service offering trips to local shops and facilities. The Access Bus serves certain areas on set days, allocating places to customers to travel on the day when the bus is in their area. Passengers wishing to travel must register with Metro's booking service; they will advise on the availability of the service in their area. If a space is free, passengers may reserve their place on that trip on an ongoing basis. More information and the application form can be found here.
