Improving lives
Community Employment Advisors
WDH employs a dedicated team of Community Employment Advisors. Working together they serve the entire district, providing support close to where our tenants live.
As well as helping people into work, the advisors assist individuals to build their skills and confidence, offering guidance on how to write a CV and apply for jobs, interview skills and tips, and support to find appropriate training courses.

Health Inequality Caseworkers
Our Health Inequality Caseworkers help address poor health across the district. Due to the direct link between the quality of accommodation people live in and their quality of life, the team works with WDH tenants and families to tackle the lifestyle and wellbeing issues that are proving a barrier to them.

Supporting living at home
Independent Living Schemes
WDH provides specialist accommodation for older and vulnerable people through its network of Independent Living Schemes located across the Wakefield district.
Residents have their own flat or live in a self-contained bungalow, but live within a larger secure scheme.
Schemes have communal spaces, and each one has an allocated worker who will arrange social activities and support resident's to live independently.
The schemes are designed for people who just need a bit of extra support at home, or the added reassurance living on a scheme can provide.

Extra Care
Our Extra care schemes offer additional support to help people remain independent in a safe environment. Residents are provided with a three course mid-day meal each day. Domestic Assistants undertake light domestic duties within individual properties to support residents.

Our Home Visiting Service is there to support people who’d benefit from a little more help at home. The service supports people to improve their independence and confidence so they can stay in their own home. People can choose to receive up to five visits a week where an experienced Home Visitor will: Address any physical or mental health issues, help to assist with making new friends, give an introduction to local social activities, read and explain mail as well as assist in communication with relatives.

Adaptations
Our team of Occupational Therapists undertake assessments on tenants who have a disability, a long-term medical condition, or have difficulty doing everyday tasks such as climbing stairs or having a bath. We may provide adaptations to a person’s home to help them continue living independently or support them to move to more suitable accommodation.

Working with young people
Community Leadership Programme
Every year WDH takes a group of young people from across the district to locations such as Aberdovey in Wales and Ullswater in the Lake District to take part in a personal development programme.
Providing life changing experiences to participants, the programme aims to help individuals reach their full potential and go on to play a positive part in the community. Participants take part in both indoor and outdoor activities and are put through their paces with mental and physical pursuits that are designed to test and develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills.
Delivered in partnership with the Outward Bound Trust and Wakefield schools, the programme was launched in 2006 and takes young people each year on a journey of self-discovery, helping them to develop their teamwork and leadership skills and gain the confidence they need to achieve their goals.
