Safeguarding adults
Safeguarding Adults means helping adults at risk live free from abuse and neglect.
Adults at risk are people who need care and support because of their mental health, physical disability, age or illness. They may find it difficult to protect themselves from abuse.
Abuse can be:
- Physical
- Sexual
- Emotional
- Financial
- Neglect
- Discriminatory
- Institutional
All different kinds of people abuse adults at risk; some examples are:
- People who deliberately target adults at risk
- The person's own family and friends
- Professionals involved in the person's life
Sometimes the signs of abuse may be unclear, but if you feel a person is not being treated right. Or you may worry that a person is getting a poor standard of care. It is still right to report your concerns.
If you are worried about an adult at risk, please contact Social Care Direct on 0345 8 503 503. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
