Wheelchairs
Wakefield Council’s Wheelchair Service provide wheelchairs to people who have mobility issues. They also offer repairs and maintenance checks on their wheelchairs.
You can ask a healthcare professional or your GP to refer you to the service.
You will be offered a Personal Wheelchair Budget (PWB) if you’re eligible for an NHS wheelchair. You can choose to receive your Personal Wheelchair Budget is many different ways.
This gives you the option to contribute to your PWB. You might do this if you want a higher specification wheelchair or additional features. You will need to pay the difference between the cost.
You can use your PWB for a wheelchair from an independent supplier. This is only available if, after a conversation with a wheelchair therapist, the wheelchair is appropriate.
Mobility Equipment
Wakefield Council also have a Community Equipment Service. This service is for people who meet the eligibility criteria or need to be nursed at home. The equipment is designed to aid daily living and support the needs of people in their homes. It is provided as a free loan for as long as it is needed.
The type of aids available are:
Aids for daily living:
- toileting (for example raised toilet seats and toilet surrounds),
- bathing equipment (for example bath lifts, shower chairs),
- kitchen equipment (for example trolleys and perching stools),
- lounge equipment (for example chair raisers).
Aids for nursing:
- pressure relief (for example dynamic air mattresses and foam mattresses)
- hospital beds
- commodes
- moving and handling equipment (for example hoists, slings and slide sheets).
To access this service, you will be assessed by a health or social care professional. They will be able to request suitable equipment to support you. You will be contacted to arrange a suitable day for delivery.
There are also short term equipment loans you could use.

The Red Cross Mobility Aids service provides equipment so people can live independently at home. You can hire a commode, toilet seat or toilet frame for £10 a week. If you can’t afford this charge, they may be able to offer further assistance.
