Legal Advice

You might be seeking legal advice, and not sure where to go for information and advice. You can use this search tool on the government website to find support in your area.

If you want to find a solicitor, the Law Society provides a free search tool. They also have a guide on how to use a solicitor, and check that they are qualified to help you. You can contact the legal ombudsman if you want to make a complaint about a solicitor.

Funding legal costs

You can find information on legal aid and eligibility criteria here. The Citizen’s Advice Bureau has an online factsheet about legal costs.

You can also get advice and support on legal aid from:

  • Trade union memberships.
  • Free advice clinics provided by Law Works. You can find a list of clinics here to find your nearest one.
  • The Bar Pro Bono Unit employs volunteer barristers who can provide free legal advice. They can also represent you in court or tribunal cases. They will only help people who cannot pay for legal aid elsewhere. You will need to be referred by the Citizens Advice Bureau, a Law Centre or a MP. You can find more information here.
