What help is available?

Employment and Rights

If you are in employment, you might need to disclose your disability to your employer. You might need to provide evidence of your disability. You can speak to your doctor or another medical professional to get this.

There are helpful guides on the NHS website about being disabled and working and what your rights are. You can find the information here.

Disability Rights UK provides guidance on what rights working disabled people have including information on:

  • Interviews
  • Job applications
  • Government schemes such as Access to Work.

You can read more about what information and advice is available on the Disability Rights UK website.

On our 'Support with Employment' page, there is information about what support is available from different charities. You can also see what courses and programmes are offered to help people get into work.

Benefits

If you have a physical disability, you may be eligible for benefits such as:

  • Employment and support allowance,
  • Personal independence payment (PIP),
  • Attendance allowance.

You can read more about what benefits could be made available to you on the Government website.

If your home has been adapted to suit your needed, then you could be eligible for a Council Tax reduction. You will need to contact Wakefield Council to see if you qualify for this. You may also be able to get a disabled facilities grant if you need to make adaptations to your home.

Equipment and adaptations

You can contact Wakefield Council’s Adaptations Service to help you if you have a disability or long-term illness. The service can:

  • Give your advice
  • Provide equipment or adapt your home
  • Advise you on moving to a more suitable home if necessary
  • Offer advice about financial help with adaptations.

You can contact the service on 01977 722 220 or by email at adaptationsservice@wakefield.gov.uk.

If you have a physical disability, you may need to use a wheelchair. Wakefield Council’s Wheelchair Service can help provide you with a manual or powered wheelchair. You can contact them on 01924 302448 if you would like more information.

Wakefield Council also has a Community Equipment Service. They deliver equipment to people and their carers living in the community who meet eligibility criteria. The equipment can:

  • Aid daily living
  • Support the nursing needs of people in their own home
  • Help with discharge from hospital.

Contact the Community Equipment Service on 01924 302447 for more information about this service.

You can also find an Equipment Guide on our website here. This guide details all the equipment you could get to make living in your own home better for you.
