Living with a hearing impairment

Your GP might advise you to get hearing aids. You can enquire about hearing aids through the Choose and Book system. This system allows you to choose where to be assessed, and it is offered in 21 GPs across the Wakefield District.

Wakefield Deaf User Partnership have developed a Communication Access Passport (CAP). This was supported by Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Healthcare workers will be provided with your medical information once you’ve completed the passport.

Wakefield and District Society for Deaf People is a specialised service. It is for people who are deaf, deafblind and hearing-impaired throughout the Wakefield District. WDSDP provides a range of support services:

  • Letter translation,
  • Making phone calls,
  • Booking interpreters,
  • Signposting,
  • Advocacy,
  • Arranging support with British sign language (BSL) interpreters.

The Reverend Mark Smith leads BSL Church services across West Yorkshire. He can also help you to arrange baptisms, weddings and funerals in sign language. You can receive the Deaf Church newsletter by email and post.
