What is a hearing impairment?

A hearing impairment is when the ability to hear sound is affected. Signs of hearing loss may be:

  • Difficulty hearing people clearly and misunderstanding what they say.
  • Asking people to repeat what they’ve said.
  • Listening to TV or music at a high volume.
  • Difficulty hearing when talking to someone on the phone.
  • Finding it hard to keep up with a conversation.

You can find more information about hearing loss on the NHS website.

Getting a diagnosis

If you are worried about your hearing, you can see your GP about your symptoms. You can use this NHS service finder to help your local GP.

You can also get an online hearing test. The test takes three minutes and is free. You can find it here.
